I recently picked up Charlie & the Chocolate Factory because Sam, the little girl who lives in the apartment below me, adores it. She even requests cabbage soup she loves it so much. Every time her mother finishes reading it to her, Sam asks to begin anew. I am a huge fan of reading books when I know they are in someone's regular re-read pile. There is something lovely about it, like I am able to peer into his heart for a brief and beautiful moment. I think my favorite part is a certain Oompa-Loompa song about television: IT ROTS THE SENSES IN THE HEAD! IT KILLS IMAGINATION DEAD!... So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install A lovely bookshelf on the wall... They'll now begin to feel the need Of having something good to read. And once they start-oh boy, oh boy! You watch the slowly growing joy That fills their hearts..." |
